The Health Aspect of the Dead Sea

Health resorts have been around for many, many years. Actually, the first health resort opened 2,000 years ago and it is still in business today. Ok, perhaps that is not a completely accurate statement since it infers the same ownership has been in place for 2,000 years. (That would be pretty difficult!) Actually, the locale of the first health resort is still popular even after 2,000 years have passed. The locale is the Dead Sea which is located in the West Bank region of the Middle East. It was Herod the Great who first utilized the Dead Sea as a health resort. Today, many people still visit the Dead Sea for the same type of benefit.

Of course, there is a certain sense of irony here. To connect the Dead Sea to health is somewhat odd considering the employment of the word “dead” in naming the sea. The Dead Sea acquired its name due to its unusual composition. Well over a third of the Dead Sea is composed of salt. That is over ten times as much as the percentage of salt that would be found in the Atlantic or Pacific Oceans. The presence of such a huge amount of salt in the water’s composition makes for a much different ecosystem. In reality, it is impossible for any animal life to exist in the Dead Sea. Hence, this is where the Dead Sea derives its name.

The connections to the health benefits of the Dead Sea derive also derive from the composition of the sea. The salts and the minerals have a number of properties that are viable to health. One way the sea water is helpful is that it aids in improving skin health. This is why Dead Sea salt is collected and sold in certain skin care products. It is also the reason why so many people travel to the region. They deliberately seek to gain improved health benefits from swimming in the Dead Sea. Of course, they also swim in the Dead Sea because it is a beautiful location and a lot of fun! The health benefits are an additional benefit added to the equations.
